Audi AG is a German automobile manufacturer that designs, produces and distributes luxury vehicles. Audi is a member of the Volkswagen Group and has its roots in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. Audi brand vehicles are produced in nine production facilities around the world.
The origins of the company are complex, dating back to the early twentieth century and the initial companies (Horch and Audiwerke) founded by the engineer August Horch; and two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer), which led to the founding of Auto Union in 1932. The modern era of Audi began essentially in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz. After re-launching the Audi brand with the introduction in 1965 of the Audi F103 series, Volkswagen merged Auto Union with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969, thus creating the current form of the company.
The name of the company is based on the Latin translation of the surname of the founder, August Horch. “Horch”, which means “to listen” in German, becomes “audi” in Latin. Each of the four rings of the Audi logo represents one of the four car companies that came together to create Audi’s predecessor company, Auto Union. The slogan of Audi is Vorsprung durch Technik, which means “Being ahead through technology”.
However, Audi USA used the slogan “Truth in Engineering” from 2007 to 2016, and has not used the slogan since 2016. Audi, along with its German brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz, is among the brands of the best-selling luxury cars in the world.
