Jaguar
Jaguar is the luxury vehicle brand of Jaguar Land Rover, a British car manufacturer based in Whitley, Coventry, England. Jaguar Cars was the company responsible for the production of Jaguar automobiles until its operations merged completely with those of Land Rover to form Jaguar Land Rover on January 1, 2013.
The Jaguar business was founded as Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, originally manufacturing motorcycle sidecars before developing passenger car bodies. Under the ownership of S. S. Cars Limited, the business was extended to complete cars manufactured in partnership with Standard Motor Co, many of them with Jaguar as the model name. The name of the company changed from SS Cars to Jaguar Cars in 1945. After the merger with British Motor Corporation, in 1966, the resulting enlarged company was renamed British Motor Holdings (BMH), which in 1968 merged with Leyland Motor Corporation and became British Leyland, which would be nationalized in 1975.
Jaguar separated from British Leyland and was included in the London Stock Exchange in 1984, becoming a component of the FTSE 100 Index until it was acquired by Ford in 1990. Jaguar, in recent years, has manufactured automobiles for the British Prime Minister, the most recent delivery was an XJ in May 2010. The company also owns royal orders of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles.
In 1990, Ford acquired Jaguar Cars and remained on its property, joined Land Rover in 2000, until 2008. Ford then sold both Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors. Tata created Jaguar Land Rover as a subsidiary company. At the operating company level, in 2013, Jaguar Cars merged with Land Rover to form Jaguar Land Rover Limited as the only design, manufacturing, sales and brand company for Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.
Since the Ford era, Jaguar and Land Rover have used joint design facilities at Whitley’s engineering centers in Coventry and Gaydon in Warwickshire, and Jaguar cars have been assembled at plants in Castle Bromwich and Solihull.
